TEMPORARY COACHING CARDS
Temporary coaching cards can be issued to any coach who for whatever reason cannot fulfill required certification requirements prior to the December 31 deadline in any given season.
Stringent rules apply to how temporary cards are issued, however, and coaches and associations are cautioned to note the following national USA Hockey policies:
A temporary card will be issued only one time during a coach’s USA Hockey career. There are absolutely no exceptions to this policy.
- Temporary card applications must be obtained from the Alaska District Coach-in-Chief.
- The coach requesting the temporary card is responsible for obtaining all required signatures, and submitting the form and a $50 payment to the national USA Hockey office.
- The National CEP Director will confer with the Alaska District Coach-in-Chief to determine eligibility and coaching level necessary.
- The national office will create the temporary card and send it directly to the coach.
- The national office will notify District Coaches in Chief of all Temporary Cards issued, including coach’s name and temporary coaching level.
The temporary card process is a lengthy procedure. Coaches in need of a temporary card are urged to be timely in their requests, to avoid potential ineligibility.
PETITION FOR WAIVER
All coaches are encouraged to participate in all levels of the CEP Certification program. A little known option is available to some coaches, however, allowing them to petition for waiving certain lower levels of the certification process. Approval of waiver is determined on a case-bycase basis and considers the following criteria:
- Education: College degree attained, state teaching certificates held, state coaching licenses held, educational administrator certificates held, etc.
- Playing Experience: College, Professional, Olympic levels.
- Coaching Experience: Number of years coaching, at what level—high school, prep school, junior, college, professional, international, etc.
- CEP Courses: Any levels attended to date.
Like the Temporary Coaching Card procedure, final approval of all Petitions for Waiver lies with the national CEP Director. Elements of the process include:
- The coach requesting a waiver must obtain the Petition for Waiver form from the Alaska District Coach-in-Chief or National CEP Director.
- The coach requesting a waiver is responsible for filling out the form and submitting to the National Office along with payment of $50.
- The National CEP Director and Alaska District Coach-in-Chief will determine if the coach meets the waiver criteria.
- The National Office will notify coach of waiver status.
• If the waiver is denied, the National Office will explain the reasons for denial.
• If the waiver is approved, the National Office will send notification of approval
directly to the coach, along with appropriate sticker and/or card.
• The National Office will send necessary information to the Alaska District Coach-in-Chief.
- Only the National Office can officially grant or deny waivers. The Alaska District Coach-in-Chief may suggest certain stipulations and provide pertinent information regarding the waiver but may not grant or deny a waiver request outright.
- No coach can be denied the opportunity to apply for a waiver or be discriminated against for any reason outside the established criteria.
- Each case is reviewed on an individual basis.
